What we think of as empty space is actually believed to be full of particle antiparticle pairs that create themselves upon separation and annihilate themselves upon their reunion. This incomprehensible event happens all within an incredibly brief moment in time. I wanted to create an image that continuously created and destroyed itself based on or linked to the viewers active participation.
A game is a type of participation that actively invites the individual to interact with it by provoking or intriguing the curiosity of the viewer. Play is an activity where knowledge can be obtained without the expressed desire to obtain it. This unconscious action allows the individual to take bigger steps because the boundaries of reality do not apply. Our brain via our eyes is on a continuous hunt to find a recognizable something. This something is determined by what we have already seen and what we are looking for.
"Virtual Pairs" consists of a square piece of Corian, which provides a background surface for the image to occur on. The image is composed of tiny lead spheres that freely move on the surface as the viewer tilts or wobbles the square. This motion creates a natural mesmerizing sound which adds a second dimension to the work.
