Deprived of Thickness __ 1995
Steel wire, stones, string and wood. 84 x 96 x 4 inches
. . . . . .
"Deprived of Thickness" explores my interest in the intangible nature of memory. The piece is constructed from a heavy wire to form individual cells that create an arc across an abyss. Some cells are empty while other cells contain river stones which were once rough objects that have been worn smooth through the passing of time. Near the center, connected to the arc by a thin line is an isolated section of a tree.

Like many people, I have very clear memories of my past. Some are stronger than others, but none of them possess the clarity of the here and now. Our memories are derived from our senses. Although our memories seem very real, they lack the density of the present. This deprivation of the senses is inherent to memory.
